Alamance Parks is looking for an enthusiastic professional to serve as Parks Superintendent. The Parks Superintendent is a critical member of our team, ensuring that our 18 parks, fields and community centers are well-managed, safe and inspiring places to play. In this position, you will work with all divisions of our department to increase our impact in Alamance County including our nature parks, the Haw River Trail, special populations, rural community centers, youth athletics and the Alamance Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau.


About Alamance Parks

For more than 40 years, Alamance Parks has been working to improve the quality of life of Alamance County residents. Through our parks and programs we encourage healthy lifestyles for children and adults, offer inclusive activities for all of our citizens, and provide access to the natural world. The department, the first county recreation and parks department in North Carolina, was founded in 1972. Alamance Parks offers access to the outdoors through Cedarock Park, Great Bend Park, Shallow Ford Natural Area, Saxapahaw Island Park and the Haw River Trail and Haw River Paddle Trail. Cedarock Park offers a Historical Farm restored to the 1800s time period, more than six miles each of hiking and equestrian trails, two disc golf courses, fishing ponds, picnic shelters, a playground, and open play spaces. Special events and programs take place at the parks throughout the year.


Alamance Parks offers year-round youth athletics programs including softball, baseball, basketball, and football. The department has a Special Olympics chapter that provides a variety of activities for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities in Alamance County, as well as a Visually Impaired Program offering monthly activities for the visually impaired. Alamance Parks also has two rural community centers, Pleasant Grove Community Center and Eli Whitney Community Center. Both centers have walking tracks and athletic fields.


Last year, our parks and community centers enjoyed over 500,000 visitors.  Alamance Parks strives each year to expand and improve upon the opportunities and services it provides to the community.


General Statement of Duties

This position is responsible for the overall operations and management of the park and athletic properties operated by Alamance Parks. The position coordinates the development of new facilities, the completion of departmental capital projects, and supervises the staff in charge of the day to day operations of the parks. Position will supervise Northern and Southern Park Managers and various seasonal, temporary and volunteer workers. Position will be based at Cedarock Park. Hours of work include weekdays, weekends, and holidays. 

The position works independently under the general supervision of the Recreation and Parks Director and is expected to exercise considerable initiative, judgment and diplomacy in the performance of his duties.  Work is evaluated in conferences, observations, reports and through evidence of the satisfaction of participants and approval of the public.


Illustrative Examples of Work


Plan, direct and review the development, maintenance and daily operations of Alamance Parks facilities.


Schedule and supervise permanent employees, temporary employees, contractors and volunteers in the operations and maintenance of park facilities.

Develop and implement a schedule of training for park maintenance employees.


Assist in the planning and coordination of park acquisition, development and improvement.


Supervise and participate in the maintenance of the park equipment and grounds.


Ensure that the department's MSDS manuals are updated by guiding and advising departmental employees of OSHA regulations and procedures.


Initiate requisitions to order park supplies and equipment.


Serve as department representative on the Alamance County Safety Council and conduct safety inspections all facilities.


Submit a budget to the director of funding needed to operate and maintain the park facilities.


Attend continuing education opportunities (i.e. conferences, workshops).


Perform related work as assigned.


Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, personnel and budget used in the operation of a public parks.


Intermediate computer skills are required.  Must be able to use Microsoft Office programs including the ability to create and maintain spreadsheets, create professional reports and correspondence, effectively operate web-based programs and be able to communicate effectively through e-mail.


Knowledge of plant and animal life and a working knowledge of agricultural and horticultural best practices appropriate to a park setting.


Knowledge of general construction techniques and the ability to learn the specialized skills associated with trail construction and the construction of park facilities such as pedestrian bridges, information kiosks and outdoor stairways.


Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of outdoor equipment including commercial lawn mowers, chain saws, farm tractors and hand tools.


Knowledge of the principles and practices of outdoor recreation.


Demonstrated ability to learn new skills through classroom an on-the-job training.


Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid.


Ability to plan, organize, assign, supervise and inspect the work of other park employees.


Ability to maintain a pesticide license in accordance with the Department of Agriculture.


Ability to be certified as a Parks and Recreation professional (CPRP) by the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA).


Desirable Training and Experience


Graduation from college with degree in park administration, natural resources or related field, with experience in building and grounds maintenance, park operations or an equivalent combination of training and experience.


Expected hiring range for this position is $47,500 - $53,000
