Education and Experience:  Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school is required. Candidates must be able to acquire certification by the North Carolina Public Library Certification Commission.


A successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience cataloging a variety of formats; knowledge of RDA, MARC formats, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress subject headings. Candidates must possess strong leadership qualities, excellent computer and communication skills and a strong work ethic. The ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain good working relationships with other employees and the general public is required.


Applicants should possess knowledge of current public library principles, methods, materials and practices; knowledge of trends in cataloging and national standards for bibliographic control and experience using a bibliographic utility.   Supervisory experience is desirable. Flexibility in scheduling is required.


Job Description:  Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Technical Services, the Cataloging Librarian is responsible for the organization, management, and distribution of library materials and maintaining an accurate, up-to-date database of library holdings.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs original (including complex) and copy cataloging and classification of all formats of library materials to facilitate their identification, access and use.
  • Interprets and apply Library of Congress Subject Headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, RDA and other established library guidelines, standards and procedures.
  • Updates, maintains and corrects bibliographic records in the library database.
  • Maintains authority records and perform needed authority work in the database.
  • Imports catalog records into the library database from a variety of sources.
  • Edits imported records to comply with local policies, practices and procedures.
  • Collaborates and consults with library staff to determine their cataloging and metadata needs.
  • Evaluates and assesses cataloging related collection management issues, develops appropriate plans of action and communicates those to library staff.
  • Works with other Technical Services division staff to ensure that workflows are effective and efficient and meeting the needs of the division and the library as a whole.
  • Focuses on forward thinking approaches to the discovery and use of library collections. Researches current professional practices and trends.  Keeps abreast of options and ideas that are being developed.
  • Attends ACPL Librarians' meetings and participates on ACPL and NCLA committees as needed.
  • Attends conferences and continuing education classes as appropriate.


This position works 40 hours per week.  Applicants must be able to stand for extended periods of time, reach top and bottom shelves, and lift 40 lbs, as well as push and pull loaded book carts.  For additional information, contact Martha Sink at 336-513-4754.
