Amount of Travel Required: 30%

JOB PURPOSE:   Under the direction of the Alamance County Manager's Office, the Director oversees all operations of the Alamance County Library system. Plans, organizes and directs a comprehensive services plan for the County's Public Libraries. Oversees the determination of the financial and resource needs of the library through the development of the budget and supervision of the expenditures of these funds. Works with the community to assure library programs, offerings and space supports interests of the Alamance County residents specific to library management. The Director will be responsible for hiring, developing, evaluating performance, and providing feedback and disciplinary action as needed. Within this role the Director will provide leadership that enables the organization to achieve its goals and sustain its mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assess staffing needs, screen applicants, conducting interviews and participating in the selection of the best qualified candidate to fill vacancies within the system.
  • Provide and or coordinate appropriate training and development for new and existing employees, supply information, technology and reference materials necessary to perform specific jobs functions.
  • Assign staff duties, relative to classification and specific to job description, communicate the expectations for successful performance of those duties and ensure staff understands how performance will be measured.
  • Evaluate employee performance, providing ongoing feedback and addressing performance concerns in a timely manner.
  • Providing oversight and direction as to the plan and organization of all County library programs including the main library, branch libraries and outreach services.
  • Prepare an annual budget for submission to the County Manager's Office; prepare and present periodic reports on library activities, needs and achievements; make recommendations on administrative, employee and policy matters. Ensure compliance with County authorizations, authorizes expenditures for library materials, supplies, equipment and contracts.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working and collaborative relationship with the Friends of the Library, Library Board, community organizations and other interested groups in supporting and promoting library programs throughout our County.
  • Promote and sustain a work environment that reflects Alamance County's organizational values and standards of customer service and teamwork.
  • Ensure a fully staffed, competent workforce and ability to create a safe and supportive work environment for all employees.
  • Ensure an efficient and effective workflow, implement changes in routine work practices and procedures as needed to modify department functioning according to community needs and employee capabilities.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Education:  Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) from an accredited ALA institution.

Experience:  Five (5) or more years of professional experience at progressively responsible levels. Prior Public Library administrative experience is required.

Computer Skills:  Prior computer skills experience with Microsoft Windows.

License/Credentials: Possession of a valid driver's license. Possession of, or ability to acquire within 6 months of service, a Professional Librarian Certificate issued by NC Public Librarian Certification Commission, required.
