Children's Services Manager Library Assistant III - Graham Public Library

This supervisory position is responsible for Children's Services functions under the supervision of the Branch Manager.  The Children's Services Supervisor develops strategies to deal with opportunities and challenges for the children's services in the branch and works as part of a system-wide team. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • A member of the children's collection development team, recommending and advising the purchase of materials for infants through high-school.  Keeps the collection current and attractive.
  • Trains, supervises and evaluates Children's Services Staff.
  • Assists children and caregivers in selecting appropriate materials through reference help, reader's advisory, and programs where appropriate.
  • Provides instruction to patrons and assists in use of technology and online resources.
  • Plans an ongoing series of children's programs and also works to attract teens to the Library by offering services and programs with teen appeal.
  • Plans and conducts or supervises story hours and purchases appropriate program materials.
  • Plans and implements program budget.
  • Develops relationships with the local schools, daycares and home schoolers through class visits, displays of school art, and programs for classes.
  • Increases skills and knowledge through professional reading and workshops.

 

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

  • Prepares age-appropriate reading lists.
  • Takes responsibility for the appearance of the Children's and Teen Areas, including the condition of shelves, displays, and general atmosphere of the rooms.
  • Drafts press releases to announce programs, story hours, and reading clubs, and prepares the children's pages for the Library's newsletter and website.
  • Conducts workshops for children, parents, and teachers.
  • Evaluates library services and makes recommendations for change.
  • Conducts outreach services to daycares, preschools, public/private schools and home schoolers.
  • Regular public service duties include staffing the service desk. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of children, parents, local community, children's literature and popular reading trends.
  • Ability to provide customer focused service and a positive library experience, relate tactfully and courteously with the public and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work.
  • Ability to create a pleasant, helpful environment.
  • Ability to exercise initiative, stimulate interest and encourage participation in reading and other library activities.
  • Ability to recommend alternative sources of funding such as grants.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience working with children's services in a public library preferred.
  • The ability to speak Spanish is desired.
