Essential Functions of the Class

An employee in this class works independently in providing a high level of emergency care. Tact, courtesy and firmness are required in dealing with the sick and injured persons and with the general public. Work is performed in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but the employee must exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing a victim's condition and in applying proper procedures and methods. Work is distinguished from that of an Emergency Medical Technician IV in that an employee in this class is required to perform the same role as an Emergency medical Technician IV and in addition at the advanced life support level in the following: emergency care in respiratory, cardiovascular systems; central nervous system; soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries; more complex medical emergencies; obstetric/ gynecologic; pediatrics and neonatal transport; management of emotionally disturbed; EKG telemetry; and in hospital/clinical experience. Work is performed under the general supervision of a crew chief and is evaluated by the employee's ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.

Illustrative Examples of Work

Responds to calls for emergency medical services at scenes of illnesses, accidents, fires and natural catastrophes; and, with a fellow EMT IV responds to life threatening conditions, stabilizes and treats other injuries and continuously monitors the condition of the patient, specifically vital signs, until the patient is received by the hospital personnel.

Places the patient or patients on stretchers or spine boards with which the ambulance is equipped and transfer patients into the emergency vehicle.

Renders emergency aid to patients in the patient area of the ambulance using various therapeutic instruments and supplies for this purpose and maintains communications with the emergency department of the receiving hospital and with the driver of the ambulance as to the condition of all patients.
Fills out trip forms, North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services statistical forms and other forms needed in the performance of emergency medical services.

Participates in a continuous training program to improve his/her competence in medical technical work; in ambulance service and operations; and in the knowledge of road and network patterns of the county in order that runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.

Cleans emergency vehicles, the garage area and living quarters of on duty personnel.

Inspects and tests ambulances and their emergency equipment to insure that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments and reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.

Checks drug boxes for adequate supply and maintenance of controlled substances.

Performs related work as assigned.

Training and Experience: 

Graduation from high school and considerable experience in emergency medical care; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements

Certification by the State of North Carolina as an EMT Paramedic and possession of a valid driver's license. Required to maintain ACLS, BTLS, PALS, and CPR certifications.
