JOB DESCRIPTION: HISTORIC INTERPRETER, TEXTILE HERITAGE MUSEUM

Department:  Alamance County Parks Department

Location:  Textile Heritage Museum in Burlington (Glencoe), North Carolina. 

Historic Interpreter (Part-Time)

 

Alamance County Parks Department is seeking an individual for the position of Historic Interpreter primarily to assist with the opening and closing and daily operations of the Textile Heritage Museum located in the Historic Glencoe Mill Village in northern Burlington. Additional responsibilities may include other parks within the Alamance Parks Department.

 

Position Description

The Historic Interpreter position is a part-time position that will require a flexible schedule of working primarily weekends and weekdays, and some holidays, with hours ranging from 9:00am up to 9:00pm depending on scheduled programs and special events. Typical work shifts will range from 4-8 hours per day. The work hours will be on average less than 20 hours per week. The primary job responsibilities are to open and close the Textile Heritage Museum during operating hours, providing visitor services, guided tours and educational programming. Operation of a retail gift shop is required. The care of a museum and historic property and its artifacts are expected. Additional staff training will be provided to the selected candidate.

Additional areas of responsibility include but are not limited to the following: Ability to work independently, customer service oriented, serve as public contact for the museum and parks, maintaining the cleanliness of the museum and grounds, which includes general housekeeping, cleaning restrooms, maintenance and organization of the museum gift shop, front desk, and overall museum facility and other light maintenance duties as required.

Qualifications:

The qualified candidate must be in good physical condition, and have a desire to work in an indoor and outdoor park and recreation and museum environment. The individual must possess excellent customer service skills, public speaking, and work well with others.

Possess basic computer skills to include Internet, Email, Microsoft Word and Excel. PowerPoint, and Publisher are helpful but not required.

Possess dependable communication; Phone and/or email

Must be able to lift a minimum of 35-40 pounds

Education:

A four year or two year degree from an accredited university or college with related study in museum and historic sites, parks and recreation, or education.

Applicant must have a valid North Carolina Driver License with reliable transportation, and will be subject to a background check and drug screening upon hiring.
